Soil

Rich, deep, firm soil enriched with plenty of well rotted compost.

Position

Sun or partial shade preferred.

Frost tolerant

Tolerates light frost.

Feeding

Not required if good soil.

Spacing

Single Plants: 40cm (1' 3") each way (minimum)
Rows: 30cm (11") with 60cm (1' 11") row gap (minimum)

Sow and Plant

Sow in mid-late summer and transplant to final positions in early to mid autumn.

Notes

Use fine mesh or exclusion netting over the warmer months to prevent butterflies laying eggs on the underside of leaves - caterpillars can destroy these plants. Keep soil moist in dry weather.

Harvesting

Harvest when plants reach a suitable size.

Troubleshooting

Slugs can be a problem. Trap them with beer traps, hand pick them in rainy weather, or spray them with caffeinated coffee.
