HINTS & TIPS:
-if you have logs/twigs/branches/leaves/newspaper/grass clippings/cardboard you can certainly layer between the soil and compost layers in the middle of the planter. Logs/branches (avoid pine/cedar/spruce for their high residue)help to act as water retention and slowly release moisture as the soil dries. By including this in your planter you are feeding the micro-organisms while restoring the biology of the soil.
- dampen top compost soil prior to planting and water plants in once planted
-all herbs/strawberries/flowers to be planted around the border of the planter box
-lettuce seeds to replace lettuce squares when lettuce starts to bolt (shooting up a flower in the middle of the head) this completes the cycle of lettuce and can be lifted and re-seeded for late summer/early Fall harvest
-3 Borage Seeds are enclosed but please note these flowers grow very large in the bed and best plant 2-3 of the seeds and once germinated and growing thin to have 1 plant. This plant is a great pollinator attraction as well as flower is an edible and beautiful addition to summer drinks or cakes as well as leaves in salads.
-harvest lettuce and kale by picking the outside layers first which encourages the plant to continue growing from the inside out giving you a longer growing period
-tomatoes love calcium so if you have leftover eggshells crush them finely and distribute them at the base of the plant which feeds the plant when watering
-fish fertilizer/worm castings tea is an awesome addition to feeding organically your plants which you can purchase at any nursery or Peevy Mart
-tomato will need staking for support
